Guido Exposes, AM Apologises
Even from across the Atlantic this blog reaches out to give the finger back to politicians...
Bates apologies for hand gesture
Nov 29 2006
A Welsh Assembly member apologised today after his rude hand gesture was captured on film and posted on the internet. Liberal Democrat AM Mick Bates was seen holding up his middle finger during a debate in the Assembly chamber yesterday.
A video of the incident appeared on the Guido Fawkes blog, accusing Mr Bates of directing the gesture at Assembly Presiding Officer Lord Elis-Thomas. A Lib Dem spokesman said Mr Bates, the AM for Montgomeryshire, was in fact engaging in some “light-hearted banter” with Plaid Cymru AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas.
In a statement Mr Bates said: “My gesture was not directed to the Presiding Officer, for whom I have enormous respect and affection. “I was showing Rhodri Glyn Thomas which finger he should use to operate the Assembly’s modern push-button voting system. “If anyone has taken offence then of course I apologise for that.”

Bates' claim that he was instructing a fellow politician on how to vote is of course blatantly untrue. But that is what our politicians do, with complete and utter contempt for the voters and the truth. Why didn't he just say he was fooling around and he is sorry?

Maybe he was being sarcastic, that's the way it sounded to me.
Not necessarily a blatant lie.
Oh, come on, Guido!
Clearly, that remark about "showing Rhodri Glyn Thomas which finger he should use to operate the Assembly’s modern push-button voting system" was meant in jest.
I think you need to lighten up a little.
I am no libdem supporter. But for god's sake Guido, he deserves top marks for a very witty apology.
Your trip across the pond seems to have effected your sense of humour. Spare us poor sod's back in Blighty a thought, we had Prescott doing PMQ's today and that spectacle was just too cringe worthy to be even remotely funny.
Hmmm. On balance perhaps Guido's presence in an irony free zone might have made him miss some nuance in the statement.
But why give a politician the benefit of the doubt?
All I could picture in my head when I read that excuse was David Walliams at the gates of his house surrounded by his family, explaining how the rent boy's cock that ended up in his mouth was purely an innocent accident of circumstance.
"Bates' claim that he was instructing a fellow politician on how to vote is of course blatantly untrue."
Because there is no complainant, no crime, no oath, no judge and no jury - you can't say that Guido I think he may well be deeply offended by being called a duplicitious liar.
HANG ON - you've got the wrong story Guido.
I've just realised that the Assembly member to his right Assaulted him!
Technically it is SHE who should be repremanded and possibly arrested for assaulting a member of the Welsh Assembly on a live Game Show.
Where are the police when you need them?
Or as we say here in Wales, you might as well be caught with a sheep as a lamb...or something like that ?
Guido, you grumpy boring self-righteous fool.
I rekcon that he was actually being bloody funny at the time too and had nothing to apologise for. In fact, he hasn't apologised. Read the statement. He's just explained that Guido et al were wrong and he wasn't swearing at the Presiding Officer; he was having a bit of fun about their bloody stupid voting system with a mate. If I had to sit in the Welsh Assembly, no doubt I'd end up behaving like a schoolboy too. As would Guido.
Mick Bates is a pretty decent human being and a good laugh. If we had a few like him in Westminster we'd be much better off.
I think you are a little harsh here, Guido. After all, he is one of your readers.. He has clearly been reading about the campaign to ensure that the blogs remain a 'monitoring free zone' and is demonstrating the logo which other blogs can put on their site to show solidarity with the cause...
hat tip to?
