Charity Commissioners to Re-Investigate Smith Institute
Gordon's Spin Merchants Front-page His Bad News

On Saturday The Telegraph followed up on Guido's story from earlier this month about the Smith Institute and today it has a leader and an article on the subject. The Charity Commissioners received calls from the Times, Bloomberg and The Telegraph chasing the story, which seems to have galvanised them into action. They have announced that they intend to re-investigate what is effectively Gordon's slush fund and charitable successor to his "blind trust", the Industrial Research Trust.

All are chasing what could be a dynamite scandal for Ed Balls and Gordon Brown, the Smith Institute's use of Treasury tax rebates on donations to the "charity" to fund Ed Balls' salary and subsidise what is the secretariat for Gordon's government-in-waiting. The prospect of being able to lay abuse-of-office charges at the door of No. 11 has hacks salivating.

Now call Guido cynical if you will, but on the day the Charity Commissioners announce their intentions, and the Telegraph articles show the press chase has begun, we learn from a deftly placed story in the government's favourite mouthpiece, The Sun, that tragically Gordon's son has cystic fibrosis. A good day to front-page the tragic news?

DEVELOPING - MORE TO FOLLOW

Murdoch has given his imprimatur to Brown - poor bugger. Brown has an enviable track record on tax avoidance. Mapley and the Cayman trust, Orion Trust(Guernsey slush fund set up by Robinson/Joska his bint) which Robinson used to fund Brown and John Smith. And now The Smith Institute. Brown reminds me of Wilson in his choice of friends like Eric Miller(deceased by his own hand)Joe Kagan and others.
Is this man fit for purpose?

Very harsh to say "A good day to front-page the tragic news". But these fuckers have bought it on themselves. How can we be expected to believe this is a coincidence, when these control-freaks have spent the last 10 years attempting to manipulate the press for their own benefit?

Condolences to Gordon. But you're still a cunt.

Agree with anonymous, it's sad news for the Browns but the endless spinning and leaking that characterises the Labour government has turned me into a glib cynic. Why did the news come out about his poor little boy, when was the diagnosis? Why did The Sun get an exclusive?

The Committee to Re-Elect the President was Nixon's White House fund-raising organization, the acronym was CREEP. Deja vu.

Don't you just hate slimy two-faced politicians who use their kids for career enhancement but let's be honest here, that's the only reason Gay Gordon got married in the first place.

Now with this disabled son (assuming it's his) Brown can compete with Cameron in the sympathy stakes.

All together now:

...poor Gordon...aaaww

The Brown's were told the lad had cystic fibrosis back in July soon after the birth. You may well ask why Brown sat on it until yesterday.

Look - I have no time for Gordon Brown. I see him as a back-stabbing control freak who is using "Blair's war" in Iraq to get rid of the PM. And I don't think for one moment that he "knew nothing" about the loans for peerages issue. But, why does it surprise anyone that king-making and planning are going on? And what difference does it make WHERE they are going on? I'm sure they checked that it was legal before they used the Smith Institute.

I suppose his publicity people are capable of announcing his little boy's condition on a day when the Telegraph is breaking this story. But, The TELEGRAPH!!??

To hear all of you gladly denouncing Brutus Brown as well as Blair, you must be looking forward to a general election and a conservative government. Have you no shame? David Cameron could be in power before you know it .... all fresh-faced and innocent. Sound familiar?

Now that we know his unfortunate personal family concerns it gives the rest of us time to decide whether to feel sorry for the Browns and hand him the top job as compensation, or whether to tell him he should take extended paternal leave and support his family at home.

The latter would be his just desserts.

Politics is grubby and always has been. And power does "tend to corrupt..." etc. The sooner we accept and even expect that the better.

http://keeptonyblairforpm.wordpress.com

P.S. Apart from the inevitable anarchists I imagine most of Guido's followers are socialists. Why the hell do you want Cameron in power? He's moving Left, that's for sure ... but only as far as Tony moved Right. He knows who the big fist is in politics today - and it ain't Brown!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/nickrobinson/2006/11/not_despairing.html

"My thoughts instantly turned to an event a couple of years ago which I attended at 11 Downing Street. It was, ironically, to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. The star of the evening was Emily Thackray, pictured on the right with the Chancellor.
Emily is beautiful and charismatic and looks a picture of health. However, she is very ill with cystic fibrosis. When she told the assembled company that she was being considered for a transplant as "time is running out" I well recall the impact she made. Several people in the room fainted. The chancellor was visibly moved. So much so that I asked my camera crew to give him some privacy."

I find Nick Robinson's article very uncomfortable reading. He seems to be almost wallowing in someone else's family problems. I find it incredulous when he writes "several people fainted". Absolute nonsense. Do you believe that statement? I certainly do not. Robinson is meant to be a serious, independent, reporter. It almost seems that buddying up to the next Prime Minister is his main criteria. Does Robinson know Brown personally? Is he a close family friend? Of course not. Then why does he write in such mawkish terms.

I feel sorry for the child. I feel sorry for his wife. Brown, I could'nt care less about. Remember this is the man who is Head of the Treasury that has dictated to the NHS to stop supplying certain drugs to cancer and Ahlzeimers sufferers. This is the man who has introduced the Family and Pension tax credits which have caused financial hardship and stress to tens of thousands of people. This is the man that has ignored two damning Parliamentary enquiries that proved this Government misled thousands of people who have lost their company pensions. Never a man to miss a golden opportunity he then sits in front of the TV cameras to show sympathy with the Farepak customers.

Crocodile tears anyone?

Guido, you miss the point. Gordon feels his responsiblity to his children deeply, especially because one of them will be disabled. Therefore it IS ethical if he uses his son's disablity to keep him out of jail is a position where he can earn money and help do him. The mind of politician. This is also why he won't build ny more jails - because he hopes the judge will not send him there if they are full.

Early identification of cystic fibrosis is important. But as far as Brown and NuLabour are concerned, not that important if you're English.

Irrespective of the boy's illness, there's plenty of Cystic Fibrosis sufferers that don't get such press coverage. And whether Brown's son is ill is neither here nor there. Serious allegations have been made and the Chancellor seems to be hiding behind his family's misfortune.

I'm still not used to being to being such a cynic, the young lad is sadly ill.

On Gordon Brown and cynicism, can anyone tell me if this story is true: when Brown goes to the Mansion House speech in the City, he won't wear a black tie and dinner jacket because he doesn't want to look like a "toff in a tux" in case the image goes down badly with his supporters. So he wears an normal suit and tie. Only his ordinary suits are bespoke and cost a cool £2000 a piece when he could just rent a tux from Moss Bros for £40. Is this a myth?

The Remittance Man said...

Actually Javelin's comment of 07:30 reminds me of a mildy humourous tale that did the rounds of SA back in the mid 90's.

FW de Klerk and his National Party cabinet were meeting a few months before the first free elections. Each minister was putting his budget request in and they were all getting turned down by the finance minister.

Education: no more cash
Health: ditto
Police: Fuck off
Defence: No

Then comes the minister of prisons with a request for a minor budget increase. The Minister of money immediately approves the request and increases the amount tenfold.

Naturally the other ministers are a bit miffed and say so. The Min of Fin smiles and says. "Guys, in six months time we're not going to be running the schools, hospitals, police or army. But there's a damned good chance we will be in gaol".

Laugh? Well, almost.

To those who complain of the cynical 'nasty' elements in this post - understandable response. Others may take the view 'volenti non fit iniuria'. In other words Brown and NuLab through Campbell(retired pornographer and self confessed manic depressice(guilt ridden))have so polluted the body politic with their lies, media manipulation, bullying and cynicism that they are the authors of their own misfortune. Views expressed do not imply lack of sympathy for the child and parents. The Browns are priveleged so will get best from NHS. If you have tears to shed save them for parents lower down the financial/social scale who have to battle 24 hours a day. No red carpet for them at the hospital; no photo opp in The Sun to arouse sympathy and understanding. BlairBrown Campbell/Whelan have a lot to answer for. The stench they leave will linger long after they have shuffled off with their £120k inflation pensions.

For you, you mong, and other anonymongs...who is to blame for making people cynical?

Brown did not need to have a photo shoot, and if this condition was discovered months ago, why now?

I truly believe that Brown is using his sons condition as a leg up and crutch to garner sympathy. the fact that it will actually make no difference in reality is not the point. the perception that it might could be enough to swing a few people behind john reid. so it does seem simplistic so say that he would be so cynical.

I think you might want to reword that, but if the timing is suspect, given that it is an old announcement, why is the argument not valid?

Getting the top job is only part of it; Brown knows, after his fuck-ups with pensions, taxes, public service wastage, civil service jobs etc. etc. etc. that he is fucked for the next GE unless he starts now to get the pub;ic on his side. He is, frankly, desperate because he knows that no win measn his relegation to the back benches after Bliar has shafted him for so long.
