Is It Really Cornerstone Wot Won It?
Over on ConservativeHome the defeat of the hell-bound over faith schools focuses on the role of Cornerstone's headbanging gang. No mention of Vincent Nichols, the Catholic Archbishop of Birmingham, who said the quota plan was "unacceptable" and fronted the Catholic uprising against the government.
So who do you think featured first in Alan Johnson's calculations? John Hayes' little clique, or millions of Catholic voters in Labour seats? The quota plan was supported by Cameron and originally advanced by a Tory, Lord Baker. The defeat is as much a defeat for the Conservatives as it is for Johnson.

A defeat for Cameron's middle-stump Toryism. That's why Cornerstain are celebrating.
Have faith schools if you want them - just look at Northern Ireland to see what a shit society they create.
What really fucks me off about them is that WE all pay for them via our taxes and our kids cannot go to them unless we all lie about being god fearing folk and have a 10 year sentance of going to church on a Sunday
Round here, the place is full of people doing exactly that, shitting bricks that the churchy mob find out you're only a pretend churchy and stopping your kids going to the church school.
At least its got the biggest drug problem in the area so there is some justice in the world
Almost the entire Labour vote in Scotland is sustained by Catholics, so playing about with faith schools is a no no! Nothing to do with 'Dave' or some loony Tory think tank
"The defeat is as much a defeat for the Conservatives as it is for Johnson."
Not if you believe the story over on CH it isn't! A depressing tale all round.
It is interesting to contrast :
1. the Church of England's gutless LMF (Lack of Moral Fibre) & absence of christian belief - the C of E could not surrender fast enough to Neu-Labour's anti-Christian demands over Church Schools, as in everything else (eg Neu-Labour's Homosexual agenda)
with :
2. the Roman Catholics' admirable courage & determination to stand fast for their Beliefs & for their Children
"just look at Northern Ireland to see what a shit society they create." - Wow those faith schools really must be something powerful if its their fault those "secular" inner city comprehensives produce their educationally sub normal dross ...
Mr Hovis
Seperation does create differences. Even all boys & girls schools create different social types from those who go to mixed.
Why should I pay tax to fund a school my kids cannot go to because we don't bother pretending to be christians?
As I say if people want them, they can have them. I'm just not going to pay for them
The Government backed down because yet again they had introduced a poorly thought out measure with no consideration as to how it could be implemented.
How can you tell 75% of parents that they can send their children to the school of their choice but the other 25% can’t.
Ultimately parents should have the right to send their children to the schools they want – it’s called choice.
What really fucks me off about them is that WE all pay for them via our taxes and our kids cannot go to them unless we all lie about being god fearing folk and have a 10 year sentance of going to church on a Sunday
WE all pay for Schools even if we don't use them. So far I admire those parents who pay TWICE - first they pay taxes for Sink Comprehensives to turn out people who destroy any quality of life; then they pay fees to educate their children.
Since most children in schools in Bradford are in State Comprehensives work out why Carlton-Bolling is such a sink school, Cathedral Community College, Immanuel College, Belle Vue, Buttershaw, Rhodesway etc etc
All good stuff, but completely irrelevant to the matter in hand.
If labour had had the balls to say right, there is a problem with the mad mullahs, who think a balanced curriculum consists of learning the Koran by heart, they would have addressed the problem.
As it is, the problem still exists and labour are engaged in a pissing contest with a group who are supposedly their own constituents !
not just the catholics. can you imagine being lab mp for burley having your surgery besieged weekly by the white working threatening violence because their kids had been pressed ganged into sending their kids to the local muslim school - complete with headscrafs etc.
nadders,
Children who attend faith schools would have to attend some other school if faith schools were abolished so you would pay for them in any case. Faith schools get extra funds from the associated community of the faithful and in return that community has a greater say in how the school is run. If faith schools had this quota imposed then we would have the bizzare situation of Catholics/Anglicans/Muslims etc. paying money in addition to their taxes and still not being able to get their children into the school to which they give extra funds. How is that fairer? Also, if I accepted your argument, then what about people with no children? Why should any of their taxes go towards any school?
When the dread day of Charles's coronation eventually dawns he should be proclaimed 'Defender of the Faith Schools'.
Also, if I accepted your argument, then what about people with no children? Why should any of their taxes go towards any school?
Good point. I calculate I'm owed quite a bit.
(...almost enough to make up for what brown did to my pension...)
Why's it so important for these churchy-types to want to "educate" young minds anyway? Scared that they won't be able to indoctrinate them in to the cult when they grow up and have a mind of their own, I suspect.

"Why should I pay tax to fund a school my kids cannot go to because we don't bother pretending to be christians?"
Why should I pay for secular schools if I want childrent o go to a Church school?
The answer to this problem is to bring state education to an end. will that happen? No, because too many people like the idea of compelling others to fund the education of their children. We are a nation of leaches.
On a different note, didn't the Tories disown Lord Baker's proposals?
Couldn't agree more Boss. How about worrying about teaching children things that will help them get jobs or into uni such as err Maths and English before filling their heads with whatever superstitious nonsense they think will control the masses.
You don't build nations by banning freely chosen identities and forcing schools to dismember themselves. You build a nation by adding a national dimension, not dismantling local ones.
Governments must stop meddling, and start leading. National identity has been abandoned to assist the EU to take over our identity, but that's now clearly been disasterous. It's time to rebuild a nation. That's all, not wreck good schools. Well done, John Hayes.
Cameron's lack of leadership does not matter if he defers to others with strong views, who do want to lead. The Cornerstone is proving to be exactly as named.
YOu can achieve great things in politics, as long as you don't mind who takes the credit.
Enough said.
