EXCLUSIVE :
Luntz to Labour : Reid is the Best Hope
Newsnight's pollster Frank Luntz will have a shock result tonight for Labour contenders. The controversial pollster's findings propelled Cameron's candidacy on the eve of the last Tory conference. BBC editors find out the results in two hours and the viewers tonight.
Gordon Brown's own pollsters will not be surprised - he is deeply disliked by the British people who see his character as fundamentally malign. Luntz's findings back that up.
Gordon Brown's own pollsters will not be surprised - he is deeply disliked by the British people who see his character as fundamentally malign. Luntz's findings back that up.
The shock will be that Alan Johnson, who is seeking to project himself as the smiling housewife's choice, the ex-postie who is a real human, has had no impact with voters. Luntz will show that is John Reid who is by far the voters preference.
UPDATE : Not so exclusive. The Times has the story as well.
UPDATE II : Reid's prices on Betfair have been slashed from 20/1 last night to 6/1 this morning. He is now second favourite.

Surely not this John Reid

There are two good reasons why Reid will have trouble as Prime Minister:
1. He is bald
2. He is Scottish
Let us leave aside all his other imperfections; these alone are enough to disqualify him. So let's hope he wins the leadership contest.
Guido,
Is this the same 'exclusive' that the Times has?
The only person that will stop Cameron is Johnson. Looks like the New Labour project is finished.
What a surprise, a dour, arrogant, Scottish control freak is not first choice for the majority of English people.
The you gov poll for the teegraph today gives woe to us tories. We should be picking up all the swing frome the other two main parties-- not just 5% of it.
It is clear that our leadership has a major problem. I feel it is lost in our main grassroots support.
this is an excellent exclusive, Mr Fawkes.
congratulations and well done!
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,1072-2373326,00.html seems to have been ahead of us all...
http://www.anenglishmanscastle.com/archives/003201.html as well :)
Like Mussolini was good for the Italians!
Umm, seen The Times this morning?

No surprise to me either. From the iniquitous tax on pension funds to every misleading budget statement that followed he has undermined the savings culture and taxed until the pips are squeaking.
Must be doubly frustrating for Brown since one of the things which is often assumed to work against him is is 'scottishness' - that Reid rather than Johnson should be pushing past him mus feel like a real slap in the face.
Brown will never be seen as a fully paid-up member of the human race until he abandons his boorish bad manners, in particular, learning that a black tie is not a risqué form of fancy dress and that wearing one at formal events such as the Lord Mayor's banquet is not an act of class betrayal.
and why is Mr Brown so quiet about the subject of European security.
and we all know what happened to THE OTHER QUIET MAN!
Guido
This follows the same pattern as with Ken Clarke????, He was Mrs Thatchers tough guy, sent out to bat in difficult times, but he didnt get the crown?
But Reid is Scottish !
Remember that environment memo Luntz did for the Republicans?
Anyone know if the weasel has advised NuLab?
The hunting season is open. The media is out to get Brown and we're getting plenty of character assasination attempts. Now, moments before his speech, the BBC - complicit with The Times and Guido - is undermining his speech.
I'm lovin' it.
Watching Tony Brown try to morph into a human being is up there with this year's Big Brother for utter cringe-wothiness.
He is a dull, Scottish accountant who I am sure carries with him the faint whiff of cabbage soup...
Not exactly PM material, is he?
Reid at the last election was hidden away because it was estimated he lost 10,000 votes every time he went on TV, but now he is the favourite of the British electorate?
I don't think so, but can think of few good reasons why he should be thought of as such.
Maybe a Tory plot to get him in as leader and cement their lead and enhance it? A Bliar plot to get him in instead of Brown?
I don't believe the nasty, arrogant, red commie little fucker is popular in the least. He is probably the one and only politician I can think of who I would genuinely like to chin, and I'm not alone.
The disjunction between what Brown says he believes in and what he has actually done over the past nine years is utterly astonishing. Is he mad?
Let's be really silly and ask Claire to step forward... In any case you just can't trust reformed smokers!
The Conference Arrangements Committee should feel thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Their decision not to allow leadership discussion needs maximum publicity in all the Media (some hope).
Any Scot in a Storm will do for me, can't see the English falling head over heels for them!
Flash in the pan for Reid, it's a reflection of his so-called tough line on crime and terrorism that has made him seem popular. In reality he is just as mendacious as the rest of the shits.
Frank Lee at 8.33: The dress code at the Lord Mayor's banquet is white tie, not black tie. Thus attired, GB would look like a prat, and he knows it.
The new leader will come from the current cabinet, no matter how crap they all are.
Gordo is in the process of losing the leadership so it MUST be one of the others. It's basically a choice between bad second rate, or good third rate contenders.
How lucky we are to have leaders like this.....
Luntz has demonstrated his sense of humour-TWICE!
No shotgun, you're not alone. I'd also like to stick one on him...though the same could be said for any of the last 3 NuLab HS's
The people "dissing" Reid-case (I'm so down with the kids) seem to forget one small but important fact. The dark blue Yanks love him!
If you don't think thats important have a chat with Jack Straw.
"What a surprise, a dour, arrogant, Scottish control freak is not first choice for the majority of English people.
"
but an arrogant, full of himself rich English youg man probably is.
Im thoroughly enjoying the thought of just how much brown must be suffering at the moment (although its not enough)oh how i would love to spit in his face and laugh when he gets to find out he isnt going to be PM his whole life a failure.
Then I would urinate on him.
Isn't this whole post, that Luntz is critical to the next labour leader post just a lifting from politicalbetting's post a few days ago?
Hope you made a few beans ramping the Reid price on Betfair though Guido! Last price matched: 11.50 - Don't forget to cover! All green = All Good ;-)
Any chance of a Brown Bingo scorecard?
perhaps including:
Moral Compass
Renewal
We wants the Preciousss
I think the Old Bill in Manchester should organise a search party...to try and find Gordon Brown's neck.
Beware the One Eyed Monster!
er, this precarious story seems to be based on the views of, wow, all of 30 carefully selected Labour or Labour-leaning voters, no? and this makes John Reid "by far the voters' preference"? Pull the other one.
what use is a guillotine when we cant find his neck?
If being Scottish is a fundamental flaw in a PM, isn't it time the Tories dropped the "Unionist" part from their official name and insist on Scotland being told they're free to bugger off now (and take Northern Ireland with them, as it was their king's idea to stick a load of protestants there in the first place)?
I can see where being Scottish is a flaw as far as Health or Education are concerned, but that's not the case for posts such as PM, Chancellor or Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom.
Re: Luntz poll.
50% don't like Brown because he is Scottish but Reid is the favorite - WTF? Sounds like they were looking for an excuse. Maybe it's just because Brown is so un-fucking-charismatic.
@Frank Lee and others: Brown won't wear a "toff" Dinner suit but when he's wearing that lounge suit, remember he's a client of celebrity tailor Timothy Everest, purveyor of £3,000 suits. Whose the toff now? Still, so long as the narrative fits...

You forget the rest ... i.e. that he is completely, totally incompetent as a minister, behaves violently when confronted in any way (put Elizabeth Filkin up against a wall and threatened her is one favourite rumour, let alone the fact that he did boast of how he had 'fixed' witnesses against him in that investigation), has been referred to even by Henry McLeish and Donald Dewar as "a patronising bastard".
Among other plaudits for him are that he is:
.. over friendly with an indicted wanted war criminal (great friend of Radovan Karadzic, an unprincipled dogmatist, both a vacuous New Labour hack and a back-stabbing Old Labour schemer, and a man so in love with the sound of his own logic that he never stops to examine his false initial premise.
The Guardian
Please, don't even THINK that this tosser is in any way suitable for high office, even as a joke. This is one of the very worst individuals in British politics, a man of such low regard and worthy of so little respect that even George Galloway was driven to compliment him. The fact that Blair appointed him to various positions demonstrates not just how devious Reid is but how completly facile and imbecilic Blair is in allowing this creature into the government.
@Julian
rofl. "ned-logic" - it's a wonderful thing to behold ...
Thanx, Julian, saved me all that typing.
i note tjhat the advert below this item accidentally trails "Inane Duncan Smith, Chief Inspector of Probation."
The man is FAR too left/Liberal for Reid to allow him into such a job!

Bloody hell! You really ARE Peter Hitchens!!!
Spot on. Reid for leader. He will lose them general election votes every time he opens his mouth. He's scary for them because everyone knows that when the TBGBs say things, the public know it's lies, but when DOCTOR Reid says something - the loony MEANS it!
Thanks Guido! 8.4% profit at Betfair
Dear God a Scot in charge of England no way I prefer our German head of state
