Dirty Money

Graphic Credit : Beau Bo D'Or
Iain Dale has followed up on Michael Brown, the LibDem's biggest donor of election campaign funds. Who, Guido believes he is correct in saying, is still in jail on remand. It is possible that LibDem members could be jointly and severally liable to HSBC for the contested money - some thirty quid a head? It makes grim reading...

Is there any wonder why our ever so noisy politicians are silent on their dirty money problems? State funding of parties will be even worse and a reward for their crooked ways. Levy arrested, Michael Brown in jail, if the police nick a Tory we will have a full crooked set.

Will anyone, or any party stand against state funding of these crooks? Or must it be gunpowder?

OUTRAGE

People are furious that Lib Dems didnt know that two companies registered at companies house would in the future be subjected to an investigation and struck off. One well placed source asked "didnt Mong know how to use his crystal ball?"

(ugh... stuck up for Lib Dems... feel dirty now)

State funding of political parties must not happen. Apart from having no desire for my money to finance any party other than the one I choose to support (and having an intense loathing of the idea that my money might go to the BNP or their ilk) state funding would allow politicians to "decide" which are appropriate political parties. Politicians of all parties are far to fond of telling the electorate what's good for them - they should just back off.

If either you or anybody else can prove that the Libdems had the slightest inkling that Brown was dodgy (Kennedy pissed, signs something he shouldn't have) then its Conspiracy, potentially 14 years up your arse (as police officers say)
It wont happen , the other crews are all too crooked to push matters.
That fat f*** Nichoas Soames, supporter of the Iraq invasion is now on the board of a company (Aegis) coining it in from the occupation, declare your interest fatboy.

Tories had very similar re donation back in 2002.

Millcentro/ECJ Investments incorporated in March 2002

Gave £1OOk donation to the Conservatives a day or two later.

Company dissolved since defunct November 2005. Never filed any accounts in the intervening period.

Company owned by Eliasch - now Deputy Treasurer but not a British citizen back in 2002 (per Times report)

All facts can be checked with Companies House/Electoral Commission

Nick raises a very good point.

The Electoral Commission does not allow new political partes with no representatives in parliament or the EU have a party political broadcast! (How a NEW party can achieve this is beyond me) So I can see this 3party dictatorship
ensure the legislation for state funding ONLY goes to certain parties and new parties and the BNP?UKIP? will have to go through so many hoops to achieve some funding.

BUT would state funding make all employees 'civil servants'? or would they still be able to raise money?

Of course we can say State Funding should never happen, but with this lot, Blairlite Cameroons and Mingdynasty
we have no chance in stopping it.

And I thought we lived in a democracy!

Mind you is this not an issue which must be decided by a referendum?

GO STRAIGHT TO JAIL

Under the Money Laundering rules (see fsa.gov.uk), for any transaction over 15,000 euros the recipient must check out the person who is handing over the cash.

This means checking their passport, utility bill and membership card to StringFellows.

If you suspect that the person is a Money Launderer then you must report this to another governement body NCIS.

If you fail to report within 7 days and the person is a Money Launderer then you will be seen as complicit in the transaction and will go to jail.

If we all followed these rules then the prisons would be full of estate agents (belgravia branches), Lord Levy types, Football agents and so on. Instead we get pensioners who refuse to pay their council taxes.

Thank goodness I only look after sheep.

This is untrue. Any party which fights more than one-sixth of the number of seats in a nation or principality of the UK gets one party election broadcast.

Completely off topic I'm afraid, but I have found the most hillarious "dumb britain" style quote, from the bbc website from a story about supermarkets advertising nutritional value:

"Our research found 60% of customers don't understand percentages so it's extremely challenging to shop in the store in an informed manner," says Beth Flower, nutrition and health manager at Sainsbury's.

"We've taken the worry away by giving some simple colour-coding."

I think I'm thinking about this too much.

Step outside the consensus, and they gag you.

Michael Brown turned up on the Lib Dem's doorstep brandishing this cheque and they didn't do the due diligence required before they accepted the huge donation - in percentage terms, the largest share of any party's election budget last year. He had no previous connection with the party - he's said that he just wanted to see a more level playing field.

If the money is stolen, then I wouldn't want to bet against the banks' well-paid legal teams being able to obtain judgement against the LDs.

sheep_farmer's right. Liability under the Money Laundering rules is personal so anyone with a suspicion that money might not be pukka, even with no clear evidence, must formally pass on their concern to a relevant person. In finance this would be the compliance department but not sure in a political party, presumably the treasurer.

The only problem with this scenario is it is not clear in what way Michael Brown might have been attempting to launder money throgh the LDs; he gave them a donation not a loan, so although they were thick and naiive I really don't think anyone in the LDs can be seen to have behaved in any way criminally.

In view of the chaos caused by Kennedy's alcoholism, I find it hard to believe that senior Libdems weren't guiding - or, at the very least, watching - every move he made as leader.

Even if they really didn't have an inkling of Brown's status, aren't they nevertheless still liable for Kennedy's actions? Senior Libdems conspired to keep Kennedy in place a leader whom they knew to be unfit to do the job and unfit to meet his legal obligations as leader. They further concealed this from the Libdem grassroots and public. This surely makes them liable to shoulder part of the legal responsiblity for any corrupt actions/conspiracy on Kennedy's part - even if the corrupt acts resulted from his mental incapability?

Dear Guido

You are right - politiciams must not be rewarded for getting themselves in a mess or worse for breaking the law

State funding would start off with small amounts but rapidly spiral out of control

It would presumably favour the established parties and discriminate against any new parties

State funding should focus on worthwhile things (eg schools, hospitals, defence of the Home Islands) not on funding political parties

As anonymous rightly says we`re talking about the Queen`s government here, what better excuse to bang her up in the Tower,if Blair`s really keeping her in the loop she must have the inside line on all the current sleaze and corruption and no doubt next weeks as well.If not he`s mis-leading her, which is surely treason. So,bang Liz up in the Tower and I believe there`s still the death penalty for treason(I sincerely hope so in this caes),Sorted,as all those crap actors on Eastenders are wont to say.

Dear Moko

I thought the death penalty had been abolished for treason and is only being retained in Europe for use (on a daily basis) by Criminals on the Innocent (especially unarmed girls, going to Parties)

I don't believe in paying political parties.

Years ago, Harold Wilson, gave a million pounds of our money to some of his mates to develop a computer system, after they'd just seen the one we'd developed. They sold just one system. We sold lots and made a fortune. I'm still waiting for the knighthood, but then we we're forgiven.

Politicians can't be trusted with anything. Let alone money!

I like the way nony 5:16 thinks. It's doable. It's memorable. It's hilarious. And it's lucrative: the commemorative t-shirts would sell out immediately, funding Margaux de trop.

Think about it, Guido.

And hey, I live in BC. If you need anything in the way of herbals or fungi, I'm your connection. A friend of mine got new uniforms and sports equipment for an entire reservation by just showing the kids a particular mushroom and saying "collect as many as you can for the fundraiser." The hippie she sold them to gave her QUITE a lot of money for them, all of which was spent on the community centre's children's sports program.

Socialism at its best.

I think that it was a mistake that the Lib Dems took the money from Michael Brown without checking his background. However, it was a mistake, not conscious crime as in the case of Labour and Tories, who sold peerages for money.

Iain Dale is clearly trying to divert the attention from the real scandal which his own party took part to, to this insignificant one, just because it involves the Lib Dems.
