Polls Give Cameron Good Reason to Smile

After six months Cameron's Conservatives have good reason to smile;

  • Tories are polling as good as they have since White Wednesday
  • The LibDems are polling the worst since they were founded
  • The Tories are ahead of Labour on schools and hospitals - even Thatcher didn't achieve that
  • Crucial women voters are attracted to Cameron more than Brown or Ming
  • The Sun has abandoned Blair, gone cold on Brown and warmed to Cameron
  • The old Tory right is mutely eclipsed as "Project Cameron" makes progress
  • After 9 years New Labour is mired in sleaze and Lord Levy will probably be arrested by the end of the year
  • Blair is loathed by much of his own party and may face a divisive challenge at the party conference
  • Labour's much vaunted "Chameleon Cameron" attack gambit backfired, a campaign upon which senior Labour strategists had pinned their hopes
  • Local Elections saw 316 Tory gains, Lib Dem's flatlining and Labour losing everywhere
  • The polls say that a Brown v Cameron head-to-head will see Cameron win
  • Donors are giving generously to the Conservative Party as the Lib Dems look in financial trouble and could be forced to repay £2.4m given by a fraudster. Labour has had to repay secret loans from disappointed wannabee Lords and sell it's London HQ.
  • The bookies are making the Tories favourite to be the biggest parlaimentary party after the general election
The siren warnings that Blair would make minced meat of Dave at PMQs look a little ridiculous now. Week after week Blair falls back on blaming the past and reeling off statistics that no one believes. Even The Telegraph and the Daily Mail have forgotten their early sceptical concern as "Project Cameron" delivers progress. Is there any wonder why Dave is grinning?

These people who still insist on slagging off Cameron look increasingly like the sort of nutter who used to wear sandwich boards declaring "The End is Nigh". Their prophecies of doom keep falling flat, and yet they keep trying. I suppose we can admire that, then ignore them.

Not so thick and vacuous to get to this position. I think you underestimate him. In my view his is a two or three phase operation to win the next election. Phase two will see a change of tack away from chocolate oranges to focus on policy by which stage he will have housewives and the soft Tories who signed up to NL back on board.

I think Cameron has grown into the job and with luck he will grow into being a good PM.

He is a breath of fresh air and i hope that he will take labour out at the next election.

The end is neigh for the old guard of the Tory party - thank goodness! I can only welcome Cameron's defining anew Conservatism for a post-Blair Britain (and a way-post-facto Thatcher Conservatives). The Tories should never again allow themselves to be defined as the party of the Pigopolists. A pity Cameron can't mass-cull the old and young bigots out and allow (smug but cheerfully mercantile) professionals run the show.

Of course, I need to dig my head out of my physics books long enough to remember that any Tories I know actually have NO empathy at all for anyone not working within the Square Mile ... or happy families from Tonbridge and Sevenoaks.

Shame about the Lib Dems ... they really should be the party of the New Left (of Centre) and Labour should be rocketed back into the dustbin of the 20th Century where they rightfully belong.

Gareth said...

Guido, er, the Lib Dems are polling a damned sight higher than for most of the time since the party was founded! 20% is better than through all Parliaments except the latter part of the last one.

Harley said...

Come now, the only thing the Lib Dems have stood for was as a viable alternative to suicide, and with Ming the merciless as leader it seems that euthanasia has entered the picture.
Let's just imagine a rainbow of Young Conservatives, Yuppies and Old Codgers whacking the shit out of Labour at the next GE. It's a lovely thought.

I hope the Tories win the next election. But winning is only the first step. If the Tories fail to undo much of the damage New Labour have done, and if they wreck the economy as they did in the 90s, Dave's office may be short lived just like Heath's, and we may have to wait for an equivalent of Thatcher to really sort the mess out. I hope this will not be the case.

Hayek's Grandad said...

Professor Quatermass - have you ever been to Tonbridge? The high street is full of run down pound shops, there's nowhere other than dire Italian chain restaurants to eat and the favourite thing for people under 25 to do appears to be to hang around petrol stations revving their cars. Are you sure you didn't mean Tunbridge Wells?

I don't trust YouGov polls but 16%'s way better than most of the time pre-2001.

Tories still as boring as they are inaccurate I see...

Guido Fawkes Esq. said...

Gareth,

YouGov have only 8% of the population wanting him to be PM.

K Harvey Proctor,

No, just comments that are crap for reasons previously outlined.

Eduded,

Balls to the lot of them. It seems only a few months ago that Tories were complaining that Guido was pro-Lib Dem. One thing is for sure, no-one has accused Guido of being pro-Brown.

If Lord Levy thinks he is likely to be arrested by the end of the year he will take a 'holiday' (beyond extradition) in Israel. Perhaps DAC Yates should question him under caution and only release him on police bail, requiring that he surrender his passport ?

"The LibDems are polling the worst since they were founded"

Far be it from me to defend the Lib Dems, but, alas they are not polling the worst since they were founded. In 1997 MORI had them at 9%, and in 1989 they were on an even more amusing 4% (behind the Greens in equal 4th place alongside Dr Death's continuing SDP, though you probably can't really compare until the death of the SDP).

I think Charlie Kennedy got equally feeble scores in Best PM questions at some point as well. Certainly he was at 9% in MORI's polls in 2001.

Well, he might win the election, and he might be a good leader, but he's still a cunt.

There's nothing quite as patronising as an old Etonian telling you not to overfill your kettle, or quite as down-dumbed as the next (but one) leader of the country proclaiming his love of Benny Hill on national radio!

A fact that sends chills down my spine.

Does anyone know how many times Cameron has met with Murdoch: I believe that once Murdoch has bitten you three times he has you under his control.

When Murdoch supports Cameron we will not need to guess what policies Cameron has agreed to. We will be able to stop peeking up Dave's sleeves for clues...

I don't know who's writing this garbage but you are talking a load of bollocks!

85,000 new nurses, 10,500 new consultants and 1500 new doctors on responsible hours along with brand new hospitals.

all schools to be domolished rebuilt or refubished, more teachers than ever before and more results all round. more kids in college and being paid and 50% of kids in University.

And the Tories are running away with it all ?
You must be joking.
You are talking bollocks!!

You under estimate Blair and Labour. There will be no challenge at the conference. Blair's ship will steady and in a couple of months Labour will have overtaken the Tories in the polls again. Gordon (I'm no fan, btw) will soar in the polls when he is PM.

Even the Lib Dems will get their act together and dump Ming.

Anonymous said...

What makes you possibly think Brown will soar in the polls on becoming PM? Perhaps you haven't noticed the ever-increasing number of England flags on cars and houses, particularly in Labour-voting areas.

At a time of rising English patriotic feeling, choosing a dour Scot is perhaps the best way Labour can lose England (and thus the country) at the next election.

Have less than 8% previously wished for the Lib Dem leader to become PM? If not than this is truly the worst they have polled since being founded.

The Tories have polled better than Labour on their key health/education issues - shocker, go figure.

Chris Rennard said...

Most of these claims about polls etc. are wrong or ridiculous.

Today's Daily Telegraph is also quite wrong to claim that "David Cameron has achieved what no Conservative Leader since John Major...has managed: a six-point lead over New Labour."

YouGov reported leads of 8% for the Conservatives under Iain Duncan-Smith in June 2002 and 9% in December 2002. YouGov was still reporting a 5% Tory lead under Iain Duncan-Smith when Conservatives MPs decided that their prospects were so poor under him that he had to be ditched.

Michael Howard had leads of 5% in YouGov polls in January, February and March of 2004 - but made virtually no progress in increasing the Tory share of the vote in the General Election of May 2005.

In relation to the Liberal Democrats, it should be noted that three months after Paddy Ashdown became Leader the average Lib Dem poll rating was 8%. Three months after Charles Kennedy became Leader the average Lib Dem poll rating was 14%. Three months after Ming Campbell became Leader, the average Lib Dem poll rating is 20%.

I see the pinkoes and orangist losers are displaying their fundamental misogyny again. If Cameron is going to be compared to parts of the female anatomy that really does put Ming and Blair in a very unfavourable light. Remember that these polss are moving the blue way despite the economy. If the economy has a hiccup in the next two years, what then ? 45 % methinks !

Kevin Davis said...

If only 8% want Ming to be Prime Minister can we assume that a fair number of Lib Dem members do not want him to leader as well? Not that I am suggesting that the Lib Dems have a membership more than 8% of the population but one presumes the poll was weighted!

"We're on our way" one might be tempted to say. The New Labour project is mired in irreversible failure and despair. The Lib. Dems. have something of the corpse about them. And nobody likes Gordo. Including Murdo. And then there's the whole Iraq quagmire. But we are, alas, a long way from wringing a majority out of any of the above. And single largest party status would lead to an inevitable lib-Lab. deal.

Actually we wrecked it between 87 and 90 when Lawson boomed it to the point of bust. Lamont and Major had actually managed it most of the way back by White Wednesday which just set us free of tied currency placebo and the rest, as they say, is history as we enter our 14th year of continuous growth since then.

Re "Actually we wrecked it between 87 and 90", I could not agree more but the problem is they carried on damaging the economy into the 90s.

I know they lost control in the late 80s as I was working in the City at the time. The Tories allowed demand to let rip which wasn't helped by cutting income tax to 40%, halving MIRAS but on a delayed basis, and keeping rates down post Black Monday (desirable though it was). They did not learn their lesson and screwed the economy into the ERM with disastrous consequences for many.

I realised what a balls up they were makin and downsized my property which made the 40 odd per cent fall in value more bearable, although it was a pain waiting almost a decade for it to return to the price I paid for it. Other people lost their homes with repossessions continuing into the late 90s and quite a few went bankrupt.

Apologies to Guido for the lack of humour, wit or relevance to this thread?

I really don't think you understand. The more you denigrate University students and their lifetimes achievements, the more you insult the parents.
As the years roll by, the build up of graduates increases and the more people you insult.
You Tories have got to make up your mind;are you going to continue with this type of verbal abuse or are you going to serious about education?
This is one area that you are definitely failing and trailing to Labour.
Personally, I'm all for you failing. It's your choice and your funeral.
